Over the years, I’ve been asked to imitate classic artworks featuring Disney characters–for Tokyo DisneySeas and Shanghai Disneyland, for the Disney Galleries in California and Florida, and for the Disney Dream cruise ship. I also do private commissions for those fanatic Disney fans who just HAVE to have a portrait of Queen Minnie hanging over their fireplace! The biggest challenge is figuring out how to adapt duck and mouse bodies into the human-like forms for the portraits.
What I love most about doing these portraits is that I get to paint in the classical style, starting with a grey underlayer and building on color glazes. Oils are so rich and wonderful to work with. I can practice painting with them my whole life and still have more to learn.
Each artist I imitate has different lessons to teach me. Thanks to the availability of images online, I can study details of the original source painting, and try to figure out how they achieved the effects they did. Of course, it’s still going to end up looking slightly different because I have my own particular style.
