I painted “Beyond the Skin” series when I was practicing and studying Kundalini yoga. At the time, I was attracted to goddess iconography. It was all part of my attempt to understand my own spirituality, trauma, and my own body. Each painting in the series represents one of the chakras. It also speaks to a specific emotion.
This was the fourth in the series, representing my heart chakra. I was working on it when my father got sick with kidney cancer, and I completed it after he died. It helped me process our complicated relationship, with all its trauma, abuse, and love. My parents’ younger faces flank mine. The primary emotion is grief.
